Delayed Decisions Have a Cost Too

Not deciding is not always neutral. Some choices slowly consume energy, attention and opportunity when they are postponed.

We sometimes postpone decisions because it feels as if no decision has been made and therefore nothing has been lost. In practice, not deciding can become a decision of its own.

An unresolved issue consumes part of our attention. Even when we are not actively thinking about it, we know something remains open.

Not every decision should be rushed. Some choices genuinely need time, information or distance. The problem begins when waiting no longer produces any new information.

Sometimes we are waiting for a certainty that will never arrive. We want all risk to disappear before choosing, while forgetting that delay carries risk as well.

One simple approach is to give open decisions a review date. Not to force ourselves, but to stop the issue from remaining indefinitely suspended.

We can ask: if I wait another month, what new information will I gain? If there is no clear answer, the problem may not be lack of information.

Sometimes the best decision is not perfect but reversible. A small move that can be corrected may be more useful than prolonged inaction.

Delayed decisions are not free. Sometimes we do not pay for them with money, but with attention, energy and opportunity.
